Planting a tree is an enriching experience and offers many environmental benefits to our gardens and open spaces, as well as providing numerous benefits to our well-being. Trees improve air quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and create beautiful landscapes that enhance property value.

Careful planning and after-care is vital to help new trees survive and ensure they establish properly in their new environment. Many newly planted trees fail to thrive due to improper planning and inadequate aftercare. With proper knowledge and preparation, you can ensure your trees establish strong root systems and flourish for decades to come.

When is the best time to plant trees?

It can be tempting to purchase trees and plant them during the warmer months to enhance the features of a garden, attract birds and wildlife or to provide some much-needed shade. Many garden centers display attractive saplings during spring and summer that catch our attention.

However the best time of year for planting trees is in fact during the cooler months of September to March! During this dormant period, trees can focus energy on root development rather than supporting leaf growth and flowering.

Selecting the right tree for your space

Choosing the right tree for the space is also important. Research your options thoroughly or consult with professionals before making your selection. Tree selection requires careful consideration of several factors:

  • Soil type: Different species thrive in different soil conditions

  • Mature size: Consider the ultimate height and spread of the tree

  • Site drainage: Poor drainage can lead to root rot and tree failure

  • Underground utilities: Avoid planting where roots might interfere with pipes or cables

  • Proximity to boundaries: Consider neighboring properties and potential disputes

  • Seasonal interests: Evaluate flowering times, autumn color, and fruit production

  • Toxicity concerns: Some trees produce toxic fruits or leaves that may be harmful to pets or children

Selecting the right supplier can help, making sure you buy quality trees with healthy root systems and proper structure. Support and guidance will not only make tree planting a more pleasurable activity but may also help ensure the money spent on a new tree is a long-lasting investment that benefits generations to come.

Top tips for tree care

Top watering tips: The key to tree survival

A newly planted tree is watered from a green watering can
New trees ideally need to be watered for the first three years

Did you know that depending on tree species and location a newly planted tree needs at least 50 litres of water per week during May, June, July and August?  This consistent watering schedule is essential for developing strong root systems during the critical establishment phase.

  • Watering should ideally be carried out in the early morning or evening to minimize evaporation and maximize absorption

  • It is good practice to water trees for the first three years after planting to ensure proper establishment

  • If the tree has a watering pipe, then half of the water should be poured down the pipe and the other half on the surface of the tree. If the tree has a watering bag, then fill that completely

  • Where possible, water should be sustainably sourced. Harvested rainwater is ideal, but bath water, or water which has been used for the washing up, is also suitable for most trees

Mulching: The unsung hero of tree care

A large scoop of fresh mulch is held between two hands
Mulch has multiple benefits for tree planting

A quality mulch layer around newly planted trees provides multiple benefits:

  • It provides valuable nutrients to developing roots

  • Water retention in the critical root zone

  • Weed suppression to reduce competition

  • Temperature moderation for sensitive root systems

A layer 2-3 inches deep (note - avoid contact with the trunk) works best. Please ask our sales team for pricing on premium mulch products.
